The basic naturopathic modalities are diagnosis, counseling, natural
medicines, physical medicine, and family practice. Natural medicines
use nutritional supplements including all food constituents,
botanical medicine, and homeopathy.
Naturopathy family practice includes
natural childbirth, natural antibiotics, biologicals, natural hormones,
and minor surgery.
Physical medicine includes the therapies of exercise
therapy acupuncture, hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and naturopathic
manipulative therapy.
Other principles of naturopathic medicine include: the healing power of
nature; vis medicatrix naturae; so restore the inherent healing systems
of the body; first do no harm primum non nocere; prefer noninvasive
treatments that minimize harmful side effects; find the cause tolle
causam; often the cause is a change in diet, lifestyle, habits, etc.
An important principle of naturopathy is doctor as teacher.
Naturopaths try to educate the patient and emphasize the self
responsibility for health; they treat the whole person and emphasize
preventive medicine, ie avoiding degenerative diseases. For example, some studies show that in the area of chronic ear infections (otitis media), the elimination of
food allergens has been shown to produce a dramatic efect in the
treatment of chronic otitis media in over 90% of children.
