The idea that "you are what you eat" is widespread in most major
medical systems. With this in mind, ayurvedic medicine, traditional
chinese medicine, and numerous other medical systems advocate healthy
eating.
This is more than just alternative medicine - allopathic medicine
also recommends low fat, almost vegatarian diets for optimum health. In
fact though, the typical Western diet is high in fat, leading, with lack
of physical activity, to the epidemic of obesity in the developed world.
The health benefits of certain foods are well known-green leafy
vegetables such as broccoli and kale for cancer prevention; garlic and
onions for cardiac health; and high fiber foods for colonic health.
More recently, soy foods and products have been introduced in the
Western diet, and they are known to have a variety of health benefits.
