Ayurvedic medicine is the system of medicine practised in India for
thousands of years. The approach combines determination of the
patient's physical type, followed by diagnosis, with treatment
consisting of natural medicines and lifestyle modification.
There are thought to be three body types, or doshas, which are
very important in determining metabolic status and health: vata,
pitta, and kapha. These roughly correspond to thin, muscular, and
overweight. After diagnosis, treatments are prescribed, consisting of
natural therapy: sunlight, massage, meditation, yoga, herbal
medicines, and dietary changes.
There are at least four methods of managing disease in ayurvedic medicine: mental awareness or spiritual healing (satvajaya), palliation (shaman), the important step of cleansing (shodan), and rejuvenation (rasayana). An important aspect of ayurveda is the possible increase in mental awareness (or spiritual awareness) as a result of these processes.
