Acupuncture - Ancient Chinese Treatment

Acupuncture is part of an ancient medical system, traditional chinese medicine. In China, the practice of acupuncture can perhaps be traced as far back as the Stone Age, with the Bian shi, or sharpened stones. Rather than a cure, it is used as only one part of a comprehensive medical system of health maintenance and preventive care.

Acupuncture uses the insertion of sterile acupuncture needles at specified acupressure points. The idea is that Qi, or energy, flows through the body in cycles, and through pathways called meridians. The meridians are accessed through these acupressure points. Each meridian has a specific relationship with a set of bodily functions, as well as with certain organs.

Acupuncture is used for a variety of medical problems, but seems most useful for chronic pain, chronic medical problems, and addictive disorders.
